In the r7 and r9, an aluminum sleeve attached to the shaft, which screwed into the head in a variety of face angles. Not anymore. Now the taylormade r11 driver's sleeve has eight settings to increase or decrease the effective loft by as much as one degree. Face angle is controlled by an adjustable aluminum sole plate. By moving the red triangular plate into the closed, neutral or open position, you can adjust the look at address. The face of the taylormade r11 driver settings range from 4 degrees open to 4 degrees closed.

Like the r7 and R9 drivers, the taylormade r11 driver features weight ports—one in the heel and one in the toe—that allow for a draw or fade bias. The following would be the experience with R11 Fairway Wood, then you can see how this fairway wood makes the difference. “After the range, I went to the course to take it out for its first round. First hit was a low screamer that didnt go too far, maybe about 150 yards. Again, more of my fault for having a too aggressive downswing. At the 3rd hole, it was about a 430 yard par 4, I hit a tee shot that normally would have gone about 150 yards, but ended up flying to around 190. I hit the ball on the face a little higher than normal but the ball still went a good distance. I exclusively used the R11 on almost all tee shots and was hitting nice 230 yard fades. Ball flight was a nice piercing mid trajectory and had good roll even though I usually dont get much. On a par 5 in the back 9, its about 500 yards to the green. I make a nice compact, smooth swing with a little extra and absolutely nut one. I check out the gps and see that I was about 245 yards away from the green.”

I just got this taylorMade r11 driver 2 days ago, switched from the Cleveland launcher DST stiff. All I have to say is wow, the ball flight with the stock BLUR shaft is great, it’s a beautiful mid-low penetrating flight, sometimes taking 2nd flight when hit really well. Toe and heal shots and off maybe 10-15 yards max, the sound is also very nice to your ears, it’s a very compressing sound. I have not experimented with the weights and face adjustments but I am sure they are great. I switch drivers every 2 years but got this for my birthday and my current Cleveland is now collecting dust in the garage. Swing speed is right about 103mph and the stiff shaft is perfect.

Roger Cleveland, chief designer behind Callaway Golf's wedge creations, has revealed a new batch of scoring clubs which will be available for less than £100 in February.

These new-look forged wedges, he says, will enable golfers to attack the pin more aggressively and with renewed confidence.

Tightly space, the 21 grooves conform to the latest regulations but have sharper edges because of a Triple Net forging process to deliver a more consistent trajectory and maximum spin control

The shape of the 1020 soft carbon steel heads, adds Cleveland, has been inspired in testing by Tour pros, who prefer traditional styling to enable them to be more versatile in their shot making by laying the face open and adapting the bounce angle where necessary.

Available with steel shafts, with dark chrome or copper finishes in left and right-hand options, the six new £99 wedges have a variety of lofts and bounce angles - 52-degree (10deg bounce), 54 (11), 56 (11), 58 (9),60 (9) and 64 (8).

RAZR sharp Palmer makes 20th hole-in-one

ou’d think it would be too late for Arnold Palmer to tally up any more records at the tender age of 82. Then again, he isn’t called The King for nothing.

The Callaway staff pro, playing his first round with the new RAZR XF irons and Callaway Tour i(z) ball, notched his 20th hole-in-one during a round at the Palmer-owned Bay Hill Club & Lodge in Florida.

The seven-time major champion, who has been with Callaway since 2000, fired a 5-iron into the cup at the 163-yard par-3 seventh.

“The ball landed ten feet short and politely rolled up into the hole,” said Palmer, who won the PGA Tour Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998.

“I enjoy the new RAZR XF irons very much. I’m actually going out to hit some balls today because I’m excited to play with this new equipment.”

Of his 20 lifetime aces, Palmer made three in PGA Tour events, four on the Champions Tour, and one in Japan. His last hole-in-one came eight years ago, also at Bay Hill.

“My first one came at Latrobe Country Club when I was in high school on a short par-3,” Palmer recalled.

“I think I’ve made three of the 20 on that same hole. In the early days I was hitting wedges on that hole and now I’m hitting 8-irons.”
